Consumer Reports has rated the LG Optimus G number one among the best smartphones right now. With a score of 79, this phone slightly edged out the Samsung Galaxy S III, the Apple iPhone 5, and tied with the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx HD. The LG Optimus G is currently the flagship model available from LG.
The good news is that prices have come down for this phone — which runs on either the Sprint or AT&T network — so you can get a good deal on one of the best all-around Android smartphones right now. See below for info and links to the deals.
The hardware spec’s for the LG Optimus G are impressive, especially the quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and the 13.0 megapixel camera (on the Sprint version). A quad-core processor is still rather rare on cell phones available in the U.S.
Aside from the camera (the AT&T version has an 8-megapixel camera), there is another difference between the model of the LG Optimus G sold by Sprint and the one sold by AT&T: the Sprint version has 32GB of internal storage but no microSD card slot; the AT&T model has 16GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot that you can use to add up to 64GB of additional storage.
Both phones have a bright, high-definition screen, 4G LTE speed, a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC capability, and all the bells and whistles of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system (on the Sprint version as of now), and Gorilla glass on both the front and back (an interesting design choice).
In addition to Consumer Reports’ top rating, the LG Optimus G is rated “Excellent” by CNET and “Excellent” by PC Magazine. Testers had a few caveats — they thought the external speakers sounded tinny, the battery life can be average (depending on usage), and the 13-mp camera sometimes generated more “noise” in images than they liked.
What is notable about reviews for this phone, however, is that in addition to the high ratings by professional testers, customer reviews for this phone run overwhelmingly positive. At Best Buy, for example, 91% of customers would recommend the phone to a friend. (As an aside, one of the more interesting comments by a number of users of this phone was that it makes a good work phone.)
